Does Your Family Have to Continue to Self-Isolate After State and County Re-Openings Due to Having a High-Risk Member in Your Household? If So, Continue Reading to Learn How to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy During the Process

Richmond Pediatric Dentistry will be re-opening on May 4th due to Gov. Eric Holcomb relaxed restrictions on businesses and non-essential medical procedures. We understand that many families will continue to self-isolate at home because a member of their household is at high risk for complications from a COVID-19 infection.

This is not the time to take chances – especially with the lack of an effective vaccine in place.

We firmly believe that all families should take steps to protect themselves. For this reason, we have created this guide.

Here, you will learn how to continue to keep your child’s teeth healthy until that time you feel it is safe for your family to make an in-person appointment with our practice.

Water with Fluoride for Healthy Teeth

Drink Water That Contains Fluoride

The first step to ensuring the health of young teeth (and older teeth, too!) is to drink water that contains fluoride.

If you have city water in your home, this is easy.

Most city water supplies are actually fortified with fluoride; however, if you have a well, this may not be the case.

The good news is, you can easily purchase water with fluoride from a retailer. This type of water is typically located in the baby supply area of the store.

If you are purchasing online, many retailers carry this type of water, including Publix and Amazon.

If you are unable to obtain this type of water, you may contact us directly to determine if your child qualifies for a fluoride prescription. If so, we will get that sent right in.

The good news is, many pharmacies are currently offering free delivery to households.

Toothpaste with Fluoride

Fluoride Oral Health Products

While we are on the topic of fluoride, we recommend that all oral health products utilized by children contain fluoride. Examples include their toothpaste and the mouth rinse that they use. T

his mineral helps to protect the mouth from potentially dangerous germs, provides a highly protective barrier for the enamel on each of the teeth, and also helps to prevent the development of cavities and tooth decay.

When shopping for oral health care products that contain fluoride for your children – be it at your local store or online – always confirm it includes fluoride and we recommend that you also have your child help you in selecting products.

Those that have a taste and appearance that appeals to children will keep them motivated in using the products while your family continues to self-isolate at home.

dental floss

Don’t Forget to Floss

In a world that is currently experiencing a pandemic, high unemployment levels, and other challenges that have stemmed from the circumstances, it can be easy to forget to floss. You should make every effort to ensure that the youngsters in your house are flossing daily.

Flossing helps to remove debris from the mouth, stimulate the gums, and reduces levels of plaque in the mouth.

To make flossing more attractive during this time, we suggest getting floss picks that are bright, colorful, and even have a hint of a fun flavor for your child. This will make the entire process more exciting and easier for the child or kids in your home.

Brush your Tongue

Focus on the Tongue

Now, we should always make certain that the tongue is cleaned. Now that a potentially serious coronavirus is spreading, cleaning the tongue is even MORE important.

Plaque, bacteria, food debris, sugars, and other types of infectious agents may find their way onto your child’s tongue. Not only will that harm their oral health, but it could have a detrimental impact on their overall health.

Simply obtain a toothbrush that has a tongue cleaner or just have your child brush their tongue very gently.

Be sure to explain that it is not just to clean their mouth, but it is also to protect their health and the health of those around them.

It seems that children like being part of the solution and not the problem. By encouraging them to keep their tongue clean, they will feel as if they are doing “their part”. Again, you should utilize flavored toothpaste to make this process easier.
